Jul 30 – What Kind of Temple Is It?

“Thus says the LORD: ‘Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool. Where is the house that you will build Me? And where is the place of My rest?’” (Isaiah 66:1)

From ancient times, people have sought places in which to worship God. The wealthy build magnificent structures and towering sanctuaries. The poor construct humble places of worship. Some build shrines beneath trees, while others establish them on mountaintops.

Yet the Lord declares: “Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool.” The One who sits upon the high and lofty throne asks, “What kind of house can you build for Me?” The vast universe cannot contain Him. The heavens themselves cannot fully contain His glory. How then can man build a dwelling place worthy of the Almighty God?

God is the One who created the sun, moon, and stars by His word. Yet many, without grasping His greatness, set apart a small stone, make it into a shrine, place God there in their imagination, and then lock the door behind Him.

Humanity has forgotten that God Himself has built a temple for His dwelling—a temple not made of stone or brick. That temple is our very own body. We ourselves are His dwelling place.

Scripture says: “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.” (1 Corinthians 3:16–17)

God desires to dwell within human beings. Yet man often prefers to keep God at a distance—confined to a building, a ritual, or a particular location.

Why is this so? Because if God truly dwells within us, we cannot live according to our own desires. We cannot indulge freely in sinful habits and worldly pleasures while claiming to belong to Him. If the Lord lives within us, our lives must reflect His holiness.

What a marvelous truth it is that the Lord chooses to dwell in us! Our bodies are fragile. They can become sick. They may be injured in an accident. One day they will face death. Yet God has chosen us to be His dwelling place.

The Eternal One has chosen to dwell in mortal people in order to make them eternal. He has chosen to transform our earthly bodies into glorious bodies. What an incredible privilege!

Children of God, never forget that you are the temple of God.

Verse for further meditation: “The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, than the mighty waves of the sea. Your testimonies are very sure; holiness adorns Your house, O LORD, forever.” (Psalm 93:4–5)
