Jun 24 – Our Refuge!
“The eternal God is your refuge, And underneath are the everlasting arms; He will thrust out the enemy from before you, And will say, ‘Destroy!’” (Deuteronomy 33:27).
The Lord is our refuge. This refuge is not an ordinary refuge — it is a most glorious refuge. See how Moses, the servant of God, declares: “The eternal God is your refuge.” Blessed is the man who dwells in the refuge of the Lord.
I once met a minister from Sri Lanka. With tears in his eyes, he said, “Many times the Sri Lankan army tried to shoot me with guns, but the bullets never came out of the weapons. They dropped huge bombs from helicopters onto our church. The bombs fell, but they did not explode. The eternal God was our refuge.”
The world we live in is a dangerous world. We cannot predict when danger may arise. Witchcraft, sorcery, evil works, contagious diseases, and accidents surround us constantly. Yet we need not fear them, because the eternal God is our refuge.
Look at David! How many enemies he had! While tending sheep and cattle, lions, bears, and wolves came against him. But because David lived in the refuge of the Lord, they could not harm him. Instead, David went against them and struck them down.
The word “refuge” means protection. The Lord became a high refuge for David, protecting him not only from the hand of Saul, but also from enemies such as the Philistines and the Midianites, keeping him safely within His shelter.
Do you want to understand the greatness of Christ’s refuge? Look at the chicks beneath the wings of a hen. How much peace and comfort they have!
The chicks beneath the wings lift up their little heads and look around playfully. They do not worry about crows, vultures, or hawks. Whatever danger may come, they know their mother will protect them.
Children of God, “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.’ Surely, He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence.” (Psalm 91:1–3).
Verse for further meditation: “The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved; He uttered His voice, the earth melted. The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge.” (Psalm 46:6,7).
