Sep 11 – The Hovering Spirit!

“The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:2)

Even today, the Holy Spirit hovers over situations of disorder, emptiness, and darkness, bringing order, fullness, and light. He works to bring forth life and to fill what is empty. As the Spirit moves, disorder gives way to beauty, satisfaction, and life; darkness is transformed into light.

If your home, too, seems to be filled with disorder and emptiness today, lovingly invite the Holy Spirit into your situation. Pray, “Holy Spirit, who hovered over the waters in the beginning, hover over us today and bring the joy and peace of God into our lives.”

The Bible says: “You send forth Your Spirit, they are created; And You renew the face of the earth.” (Psalm 104:30)

The hovering of the Holy Spirit has been compared to a bird lovingly brooding over its eggs. As the bird sits upon the eggs, its warmth causes a living and beautiful chick to develop within what initially appears to be nothing more than an unformed substance. It is something beyond human understanding. In the same way, the Holy Spirit moves over empty and seemingly hopeless situations, bringing forth something glorious according to God’s purpose.

We encounter the Holy Spirit for the first time in Scripture in Genesis 1:2. The Spirit who began His work there continues to work throughout Scripture, right up to Revelation 22:17. Wherever He works, life comes forth and the creative power of God is revealed. When His work is resisted or neglected, however, disorder, emptiness, and darkness can once again take hold.

The Spirit who initially moved over creation later began to move upon human hearts. He moves to give life to people who are spiritually dead because of sin and transgression.

“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing.” (John 6:63) He is able to breathe new life into any person, strengthen and establish them, and bring order, fullness, and light into their lives.

The Holy Spirit is also moving upon the Church today. Seven times in Revelation chapters 2 and 3 we hear the words: “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” (Revelation 2:7)

If you have ears that are attentive to the voice of the Holy Spirit, you can clearly hear His gentle voice speaking to your heart.

Dear children of God, may the Spirit of the Lord hover over you! May He breathe new life into every dry and lifeless area of your life. May He bring divine order where there is confusion, fullness where there is emptiness, light where there is darkness, and renewed strength where there is weakness.

Verse for further meditation: “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” (Romans 8:26)
