Oct 25 – Things That Are Precious!
“Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious.” (1 Peter 2:6)
There are many things that people consider precious. Yet, as time passes, many of them lose their value, decay, or perish. Some who were once highly esteemed are later regarded as worthless.
What, then, is precious in the sight of the Lord?
- A Gentle and Quiet Spirit: In the eyes of the world, beautiful clothing and costly jewellery are considered precious. But in the sight of the Lord, “the hidden person of the heart”—a gentle and quiet spirit—is of great value (1 Peter 3:4).
Those who possess a gentle spirit are blessed. Jesus said that they shall inherit the earth (Matthew 5:5). God looks beyond outward appearance. What He values most is the character He sees within us.
- Divine Wisdom: In the eyes of the world, pearls are considered extremely valuable. But in the sight of the Lord, divine wisdom is far more precious.
Job declares that the value of wisdom is greater than that of precious stones (Job 28:18). Likewise, Proverbs says that a virtuous woman is worth far more than precious jewels (Proverbs 31:10).
Jesus compared the Kingdom of heaven to a merchant searching for beautiful pearls. When he found one pearl of great price, he sold everything he had and bought it (Matthew 13:45–46). The Apostle Paul regarded Christ Himself as that priceless treasure. Because of Christ, he considered everything else loss and counted it as rubbish in comparison with knowing Him and gaining Him (Philippians 3:7–11).
What a powerful perspective! When Christ becomes precious to us, the things that once seemed most valuable in this world lose their importance.
- Jesus Christ Himself: In the eyes of the world, wealthy people, rulers, influential people, and those of high social status may appear precious. But to us, Jesus Christ is infinitely more precious. He carried the cross for us. He suffered and died for us. He shed His precious blood to redeem us (1 Peter 1:19). And Christ Himself is the precious Cornerstone upon whom all our hope rests (1 Peter 2:6).
Children of God, Christianity possesses treasures far more precious than the riches of this world.
You may appear to be an ordinary person in the eyes of the world. You may not possess great wealth, position, influence, or recognition. But the Lord has placed His name upon you and given you the dignity of belonging to Him. He has made you precious in His sight.
Verse for further meditation: “You were not redeemed with corruptible things… but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” (1 Peter 1:18–19)
