Aug 19 – When He Was Alone!
“Look to Abraham your father… For I called him alone, and blessed him and increased him.” (Isaiah 51:2)
When the Lord blessed Abraham, he was all alone. God called him out from his country, his father’s house, and his relatives, setting him apart for His own purpose. He entered into a covenant with Abraham, blessed him, and made him exceedingly fruitful.
Are you standing alone today? Do you lament, saying, “There is no one to join me in prayer,” or, “I am the only believer in my village,” or, “There is no one in my family to worship the Lord with me”? If so, take heart. It is often in such seasons of loneliness that you experience the Lord’s power most profoundly.
When Abraham set out for Canaan in obedience to God’s call, there was no one to support him. Yet the Lord Himself stood by him, protected him, sustained him, and led him every step of the way.
Perhaps you are saying, “There is no one to stand with me. There is no one to speak on my behalf.” Do not be discouraged. The Lord is fully able to bless you even when you stand alone. He is able to raise up countless helping hands for you.
Although Abraham often stood alone, he cultivated the habit of standing before the Lord. The Bible says, “Abraham stood before the Lord” (Genesis 18:22). This is the key to blessing. When you stand before the Almighty God, the Creator of heaven and earth, He will open every door before you. The One who made a way in the wilderness will also make a way for you. He will stand by you and accomplish all that concerns you.
When Elijah ascended Mount Carmel, he stood there alone. The people of Israel had plunged into the worship of Baal. Four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal opposed him, and King Ahab and Queen Jezebel stood against him.
Yet when Elijah stood alone, the Lord answered his prayer by sending fire from heaven. Instantly, the people fell on their faces and confessed with one voice, “The Lord, He is God!” Elijah’s testimony was simple: “As the Lord God of Israel lives, before whom I stand…” (1 Kings 17:1).
Elisha, who followed Elijah as his disciple for nearly fourteen years, learned the same secret – to stand before the Lord. Therefore, even when standing before a mighty king, he could boldly declare, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand…” (2 Kings 3:14)
Dear children of God, when you learn to stand before the Lord, you will not have to stand fearfully before mere men. You will not live in fear, nor be intimidated by earthly authorities. Place your confidence in the Lord, and stand steadfast in His presence.
Verse for further meditation: “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings.” (Luke 1:19)
