Aug 02 – The Consequences of Broken Relationships!

“Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth.” (Genesis 4:14)

Consumed by jealousy and devoid of brotherly love, Cain murdered his brother Abel. In doing so, he brought spiritual ruin upon himself. His sin left him wandering in loneliness and alienation.

Many people, lacking brotherly affection and failing to value family relationships, allow even minor matters to create bitterness and division. In doing so, they build walls of isolation around themselves and forfeit the blessings that flow from loving fellowship.

A woman who had married into a family showed little respect for her husband’s relatives. She assumed that every visitor came only to borrow money or seek help, and she treated them with contempt and disdain. Gradually, the relatives stopped visiting altogether. Having isolated her husband from his extended family, she effectively shut the door on every relationship. A few years later, when she fell seriously ill, there was no one to care for her or comfort her. The pain of loneliness overwhelmed her heart.

Dear children of God, cultivate brotherly love, warm friendships, and affectionate relationships. “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity! …It is like the dew of Hermon, Descending upon the mountains of Zion; For there the Lord commanded the blessing – Life forevermore.” (Psalm 133:1,3)

The Scriptures also warn us: “He who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.” (1 John 2:11)

Strive to preserve brotherly love. Let brotherly kindness continue. Never wound others with careless or angry words. Instead, seek reconciliation, restore broken relationships, and bring healing where there has been hurt.

Cain not only severed his relationship with his brother, but he also cut himself off from fellowship with God. He turned away from the Lord’s presence and chose a life of isolation. “I shall be hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth.” (Genesis 4:14) In effect, he pronounced a curse upon himself.

Dear children of God, make every effort to restore and strengthen your relationships with others. More importantly, ensure that your relationship with the Lord remains unbroken and intimate.

Verse for further meditation: “Not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous.” (1 John 3:12)
