Oct 10 – There Is a Way!
“There is a path which no bird knows, Nor has the falcon’s eye seen.” (Job 28:7)
Here, Scripture speaks about the falcon, a bird with remarkably sharp eyesight. Its feet are strong, and its wings enable it to fly swiftly. Falcons hunt and feed on other birds and on animals such as mice and rabbits, and they also carry food to their young.
Some falcons are able to travel many miles from their nests and, when returning, find their way back with remarkable accuracy.
Yet Job speaks of a way that even the keen eyes of the falcon cannot see. Pilots flying high above the earth have not seen it. Even astronauts who have travelled by rocket beyond the earth into the realms of space have not discovered it.
Job speaks of this way almost like a mysterious riddle. It is the way along which the saints will be caught up at the coming of the Lord.
The prophet Isaiah says: “A highway shall be there, and a road, And it shall be called the Highway of Holiness.” (Isaiah 35:8) That is the way that leads you to heaven. Jesus said: “Enter by the narrow gate.” (Matthew 7:13)
The way that leads to destruction is broad, and many enter by it. But the gate that leads to life is narrow and the way is difficult, and only a few find it (Matthew 7:13–14).
Perhaps Elijah was taken along this very heavenly way when the chariot of fire and horses of fire separated him from Elisha and he was carried up by a whirlwind. Perhaps Enoch also travelled this way when he was taken by God without seeing death. And when the time came for Jesus Christ to leave this earth, clouds received Him. He was taken up by this heavenly way and is now seated at the right hand of the Father.
When the trumpet sounds, we too will be caught up along that way! On that day, the world will look upon us and marvel: “Who are these who fly like a cloud, And like doves to their roosts?” (Isaiah 60:8) What a glorious day that will be! Let us rejoice and sing with anticipation: “I will fly away like the chariot of Amminadab, Leaning upon my Beloved Jesus!”
Our time on this earth is short. It passes away like a shadow (Psalm 144:4). It vanishes like a vapour (James 4:14). It passes like a tale that is told (Psalm 90:9). We are like grass that flourishes in the morning and by evening is cut down and withers away (Psalm 90:6). But our story does not end here. We will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever and ever.
There is a way—a way the eyes of this world cannot see. It is the way to our eternal home. Let us keep our eyes fixed upon Jesus and joyfully await the day when He comes to receive us to Himself.
Verse for further meditation: “I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” (John 14:3)
