Sep 29 – A Life Without Deceit!

“Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, ‘Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!’” (John 1:47)

Nathanael was one of the early disciples of Jesus. In John’s Gospel he is called Nathanael, while in the other Gospels he is identified as Bartholomew (Matthew 10:3; Mark 3:18). It was Philip who first brought Nathanael to Christ (John 1:45).

What a beautiful testimony Jesus gave concerning Nathanael! “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!” In other words, he was a man without guile—a sincere and upright child of God, with no duplicity in his heart; a man who did not say one thing outwardly while harbouring something entirely different within.

What a blessed privilege it is to receive such a testimony from the Lord!

“For man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7) The Lord searches and examines the innermost depths of the heart. Nothing is hidden from His eyes.

Sadly, many people do not live upright and sincere lives. They live behind masks, practising hypocrisy and speaking deceitfully. Judas Iscariot followed Christ for more than three years, yet his heart was filled with deception and treachery.

Even the kiss with which Judas greeted Jesus was not an expression of genuine affection; it was the very sign by which he betrayed Him. That is deceit. He concealed treachery in his heart while outwardly behaving like a good and loving disciple. What a tragic end Judas came to!

The Scripture gives this solemn warning: “He who hates, disguises it with his lips, And lays up deceit within himself; When he speaks kindly, do not trust him, For there are seven abominations in his heart.” (Proverbs 26:24–25)

During the earthly ministry of Jesus, the Pharisees, Sadducees and scribes were regarded as religious leaders. Yet they were not truly spiritual people, nor were they Israelites without deceit. They carefully observed religious rituals and traditions, while their hearts remained far from God.

The Lord confronted them with very strong words: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!” “For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.” (Matthew 23:27) And again He said: “Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.” (Matthew 23:28)

Throughout Matthew 23, the Lord repeatedly pronounced “Woe” upon the scribes and Pharisees because of their hypocrisy. The Lord hates a life of deceit. He does not desire a life that merely appears spiritual outwardly while being different within.

Dear children of God, build your life upon sincerity and truth. Let your life be free from hypocrisy. Speak the truth as truth. Let your heart agree with what your lips speak. May the Lord give us a pure heart, sincere motives, truthful lips and a life without deceit—so that we may walk in the light of His presence and find favour in His sight.
