Oct 29 – Guard Yourself!

“These are the ones who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins.” (Revelation 14:4)

When the Apostle John writes about the great multitude standing with the Lamb on Mount Zion, he says that they are pure and undefiled. They have guarded themselves from sexual impurity and remained faithful. The Lord expects holiness in our spiritual lives and purity and faithfulness in our family lives.

From the beginning of creation, God made humanity male and female and established marriage as His divine institution. The Lord Himself provides a suitable companion for each person. Scripture declares that a man shall leave his father and mother, be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh (Genesis 2:24).

When Jesus Christ walked upon this earth, many women ministered to Him and followed Him. He visited the home of Martha and Mary. He met Mary Magdalene. He led the Samaritan woman into the truth. Yet He never compromised His holiness or allowed Himself to be defiled. Jesus could boldly ask: “Which of you convicts Me of sin?” (John 8:46)

Jesus lived a holy life and left behind pure and spotless footsteps for us to follow. He taught that the commandment against adultery goes deeper than the outward act. It reaches into the heart. He warned that looking at a woman with lustful intent is already adultery in the heart (Matthew 5:27–28).

Job, a godly man of the Old Testament, was deeply concerned about maintaining purity. He had made a deliberate covenant concerning his eyes. He asked: “How then could I look upon a young woman?” (Job 31:1)

We too must guard our eyes, our thoughts, our imagination, our conversations, and our relationships. In a world where impurity is presented so freely, we must intentionally protect the holiness God has entrusted to us.

The reference to “women” in Revelation also carries a spiritual significance. Throughout Scripture, idolatry is sometimes portrayed as spiritual adultery. When Israel turned away from the Lord and followed idols, the Lord described their unfaithfulness in terms of harlotry.

In the same way, anything that takes the place of God in our hearts can become spiritual unfaithfulness. Love for the world can defile us spiritually. Those who have been redeemed by the blood of Christ must remain like a pure and spotless bride, wholly devoted to the Bridegroom. The Scripture says that among the saints there should not even be a reputation for sexual immorality, impurity, or covetousness (Ephesians 5:3). Therefore, children of God, guard your spiritual purity.

Verse for further meditation: “For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 11:2)
