Oct 08 – The Weaver Bird!

“Look at the birds of the air.” (Matthew 6:26)

The very first time I saw the nest of a weaver bird, I was amazed at the remarkable way these little birds construct their nests. As I observed them, I was reminded that I too must build my dwelling in heaven with excellence and care.

Weaver birds can be found in India, Indonesia, Africa, and several other parts of the world. They construct their nests remarkably quickly, using their beaks and feet. They make use of fibres, grass, leaves, and other natural materials. Their nests are generally built somewhat above the ground, providing protection from danger.

These birds are deeply concerned about their young and their safety. Although their nests may appear to hang upside down, they have a separate chamber inside where their chicks are safely sheltered.

Some varieties of weaver birds are remarkably communal. When one bird begins constructing a nest, other birds come and assist in various ways. During certain seasons, hundreds of nests may be seen within a single month.

They are social birds that gather together in the evenings, singing and rejoicing. As God’s children observe and appreciate the wonders of creation, we can look at these weaver birds and give glory to the name of the Lord.

In some countries, the male weaver bird builds three or four nests and presents them to the female. The female chooses the nest she prefers, and the pair then make their home there, lay their eggs, and raise their young. The other nests are subsequently abandoned or dismantled.

Who gave these weaver birds the wisdom and skill to construct such beautiful and intricate homes? It is the Lord our God. “In whose hand is the life of every living thing, And the breath of all mankind.” (Job 12:10)

When enemies threaten these birds, they come together and drive the enemy away. When snakes attempt to climb toward their nests, the birds raise a united alarm and employ every means available to keep the snakes away and protect their eggs and chicks. Their love, unity, and togetherness should serve as a challenge to us as Christians.

Children of God, just as birds care for and protect their young, the Lord spreads His wings over us, redeems us, and keeps us safe. He protects us from every kind of evil. Whether it is an arrow that flies by day, a pestilence that walks in darkness, or destruction that lays waste at noonday, the Lord covers us beneath His wings and watches over us as the apple of His eye.

Verse for further meditation: “As birds flying about, So will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem.” (Isaiah 31:5)
