Aug 25 – “Give us day by day our daily bread.” (Luke 11:3)

The expression “daily bread” refers to far more than physical food alone. In Scripture, it encompasses all the necessities of life. How essential it is, then, for us to come early each day to our heavenly Father, who delights in giving every good gift to His children.

Jesus said: “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?… Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” (Matthew 6:25–26)

How, then, do we receive our daily bread?

First, when we seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness above all else, the Lord faithfully provides all our earthly needs as well. “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)

Second, we must believe without doubt that God will supply our needs. When we trust Him wholeheartedly, we receive what He has promised.

In 1982, the Lord impressed upon my father the burden to provide spiritual nourishment for God’s people. In obedience to that calling, he began publishing a monthly daily devotional magazine titled Daily Bread (Antantulla Appam). The first edition consisted of only four hundred copies. Nearly forty-four years have now passed, and today thousands of copies reach Tamil-speaking believers across the world. The Lord has graciously blessed this daily devotional to help readers meditate on His Word, understand its deeper truths, and claim His precious promises.

As the Scriptures declare: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4)

The psalmist beautifully describes the value of God’s Word: “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple…More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.” (Psalm 19:7, 10)

Dear child of God, receive the Word of the Lord as heavenly manna. Read it with eager expectation. Claim His promises as your own inheritance, for they have been graciously given to you by your loving heavenly Father.

Verse for further meditation: “Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.” (1 Peter 2:1–3)
