May 26 – A Chosen Generation!

“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9)

When we read God’s Word again and again, we begin to understand who we are and what God’s purpose for us is—and we are led to glorify Him. In God’s sight, we are: A chosen generation; A royal priesthood; A holy nation; and His own special people.

In the Old Testament, God chose Israel—the descendants of Abraham—as His own people. He:

  • Gave them promises
  • Made a covenant with them
  • Raised leaders among them
  • Fought their battles
  • Drove out nations before them
  • Gave them the land flowing with milk and honey

All this happened because they were God’s chosen people.

In the New Testament, God has chosen us in Christ. He has:

  • Shed His precious blood for us
  • Given us forgiveness of sins
  • Granted us the joy of salvation
  • Made a covenant with us through His blood
  • Promised us the heavenly kingdom

He desires to lovingly lead us into eternal life.

When David realized that God had chosen him—though he was insignificant in his own family—his heart overflowed with gratitude. He said: “What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me?”, and he continued: “I will take up the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord.”

God’s choosing is truly wonderful. Some are chosen in difficult circumstances; some even before birth; and some others even before the foundation of the world.

He chooses the weak to shame the strong; the simple to shame the wise; and the lowly and rejected.

As Peter writes: “…elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ…” (1 Peter 1:2)

Dear child of God, even if the world calls you a stranger or outsider, you are chosen by the Most High God.

Verse for further meditation: “You also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 2:5)
