Aug 29 – Lord, Who Are You?

“And he said, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ Then the Lord said, ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’” (Acts 9:5)

When Zacchaeus longed to know who Jesus was, the Lord revealed Himself to him as the Saviour. But when Saul desired to know who the glorious One was who had appeared to him on the road to Damascus, the Lord did not immediately reveal much about Himself. Instead, He revealed the true condition of Saul’s own heart.

Jesus said, “Saul, you are persecuting Me. It is hard for you to kick against the goads. I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” Those words shattered Saul’s pride and transformed his life. In time, they shaped him into the mighty Apostle Paul.

To some, the Lord reveals His character through His names. The Scriptures declare: “And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)

When believers are asked who the Lord is, they often describe Him according to His character. They testify that He is good, mighty, and merciful.

The closer we draw to the Lord, the more our hearts overflow with gratitude, compelling us to declare again and again, “The Lord is good!” “Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good.” (Psalm 34:8)

Though He was cruelly crucified, He was neither a criminal nor an evil man. He was perfectly good. Yet, because of our sins, the Sinless One became the sacrifice for our atonement. Though innocent, He hung upon the cross as though He were guilty. Truly, He is good.

Pilate, after examining Him, could find no fault in Him. Even Pilate’s wife pleaded with her husband not to harm that just Man. Indeed, He is good.

Secondly, the Lord is not only good – He is almighty. “I am Almighty God…” (Genesis 17:1) Nothing is too difficult for Him. Creation itself continues to testify to His infinite power. Every miracle He performed reveals that He is mighty to heal the sick, cast out demons, and raise the dead. The same mighty Lord is able to perform great miracles in your life today.

Thirdly, the Lord is merciful. He is rich in mercy and shows steadfast mercy to a thousand generations. It is because of His unfailing mercy that the world continues to exist.

Dear child of God, may these three beautiful qualities of Christ be increasingly evident in your own life – His goodness, His power, and His mercy. As you reflect His character, others who see you will catch a glimpse of the Father through your life.
