Aug 03 – I Have Seen God Face to Face!

“So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: ‘For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.’” (Genesis 32:30)

Jacob believed that no one could see the face of God and live. Many of the saints in the Old Testament shared this understanding. They regarded God as a consuming fire and One who dwells in unapproachable light.

Yet, although He is indeed a consuming fire and a God who is holy and jealous, He is also a God of infinite love and tender compassion. The Scriptures declare: “So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend.” (Exodus 33:11)

I have observed many fathers who relate to their children with love and gentleness. Even when their children make mistakes, they correct them with measured discipline, guiding them back to the right path. Because they deeply value their children’s education, character, and future, they are willing to make every sacrifice for their well-being. Their very countenance reflects their affection. Likewise, the face of our Lord radiates grace and loving kindness.

First, the Lord’s face reveals His divine presence. From that presence flows His perfect peace. Every time God’s servants pronounce the benediction upon the congregation, they declare: “The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.” (Numbers 6:26)

The peace that comes from the Lord’s presence is unlike any peace the world can give or take away. It is the peace of God that surpasses all understanding. His gracious countenance fills our hearts with joy and gladness.

Second, from His face we receive the immeasurable riches of His grace. “The Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you.” (Numbers 6:25)

Notice that His face shines upon us. That radiant light becomes grace poured out upon His children. David understood this well and declared that the Lord’s lovingkindness is better than life itself.

The psalmist also teaches us how to seek the Lord’s face: “As for me, I will see Your face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied when I awake in Your likeness.” (Psalm 17:15)

Dear children of God, long for the Lord’s face as loving children long for the face of their father. Pray as the psalmist prayed: “Make Your face shine upon Your servant, And teach me Your statutes.” (Psalm 119:135)

Seek the Lord’s face continually, and receive the abundant blessings that flow from His gracious presence.

Verse for further meditation: “When You said, ‘Seek My face,’ my heart said to You, ‘Your face, Lord, I will seek.’” (Psalm 27:8)
